Listen: Do you hear crickets chirping in your company’s social media channels? If you want to create a buzz, you’ve got to do something to stand out.

Too many businesses do their social media posting by the books – and that’s boring. People don’t want to be brow beaten with promotional offers, irrelevant content, or a steady stream of cat memes.

Instead, give them something they really want.

Here are some actionable tips to rev up your social media and get your tutoring company or afterschool business on the radar.

1. Embrace visuals.
Visual content is powerful. It takes a split second to digest, and it’s a whole lot more compelling than just straight text. Pinterest is all about vibrant, eye-catching images, and on Facebook, it’s the posts that contain photos that get the most likes, shares, and comments. Before sharing anything on social media, think about how you can kick it up a notch with a visual element. (See how this blog post has an enticing visual to draw readers in? You can create the same for your blog and social sites. I like creating visuals on Canva.)

2. Show off your expertise.
You’re an expert in your tutoring company’s products and services, and you’re also an expert in your market. Own it. Show potential customers that you know your stuff by sharing your knowledge in social media. Post useful tips, how-to’s, and insight that your audience finds valuable.

3. Generate engagement.
Don’t think of social media as a way for you to constantly push your content and your agenda. Use your social channels to actually be social. Invite your fans and followers to weigh in and share their thoughts. You should aim to build an energetic community in which people enjoy participating.

Promotional items are perfect for making your social presence known.

4. Use branded swag to promote your social media sites.
Just because you create a Facebook page or Twitter account doesn’t mean you’ll instantly attract followers. First, you need to spread the word that you have a presence in the social media sphere. Promotional products let you put your social sites right into your audience’s hands. You could print social icons or your social address below the logo on the items you hand out. Or, you could print a QR code if the product is large and flat enough for the code to be readable.

Social media is an integral part of any successful marketing strategy. But for it to work, people have to know about it, and they have to find value in connecting with you.
Use the tips I’ve listed here to launch your social presence or simply get it off the ground if it’s been sitting stagnant for a while.
