In any given marketplace, there are a number of competitors. To be noticed and remembered, your tutoring or afterschool business must differentiate.
Potential customers need to know what sets your business apart from the rest.
What do you do or offer that’s a little different from others in your niche? To make your tutoring business stick in the minds of your customers, you must determine a distinctive point of difference.
Here are four tried-and-true ways to differentiate:
1. Do something unique.
If you want your tutoring business to be remembered, make it memorable. Perhaps you host an annual Learning Carnival with games, popcorn, and logo prizes. Or maybe you surprise students with pop quizzes and reward them with promotional items – think custom pencils or calculators.
2. Fill in the gaps.
Oftentimes, you can make a name for your company by delivering in areas your competitors are not. Look for any holes in their offerings, and seize the opportunity to be the leading tutoring company in that area. Could you offer after-hours services or on-location tutoring? Beat the competition by filling in what they’re missing. You don’t need to be near a military base to offer ASVAB tutoring, recruits come from all over the nation for example.
3. Deliver a killer offer.
Imagine if your tutoring business became known for an offer you make. Maybe it’s free workbooks when students sign up for a particular session, or perhaps students get free tuition or sessions when three of their friends sign up. If the offer is appealing enough, it’ll generate buzz for your business.
4. Make your messaging about your value.
If you want to stand out as a leader in the tutoring and afterschool market, you need to effectively communicate what you do – and put a distinctive spin on it. Don’t just be focused on helping students excel academically – communicate that you’re committed to producing more straight-A students or more SAT-prepared students than any other company.
Making your business stand out doesn’t have to be complicated. You simply need to zero in on your differentiating factors and communicate them to your audience. It takes time, patience and creativity, but when you invest some thought into what makes your business different, you’ll reap the benefits of a brand that’s thought of first.
As mentioned by Jason from epromos, offering something that your competitors don’t is always a great way to be known and this usually entails diversification of some kind. Offering tutoring one on one, or weekend workshops where kids can come and go for homework help. Think about STEM projects during afterschool care time and test prep for the ACT and SAT and don’t forget ASVAB.
