I have a conference coming up in October in Orlando – The Student Success Summit. It’s a new one for us in the tutoring and afterschool world and is an amalgamation of the Florida Afterschool Conference and Educational Strategies and Student Engagement Institute and we will be there giving away Oases goodies and spreading the word about my day job; the truly awesome scheduling and tracking software that is Oases Online.
So with conference season on the horizon I laughed myself silly at a recent blog post by the great and awesome folks at Hubspot featuring the 12 different personalities and their motives for attending conferences and conventions. However, they did not include the ones most often seen at previous Florida Afterschool Conferences so The Tutor Report expands that to 15 personalities to include my 3 extra personalities which I am sure are not just common to the Florida Afterschool Conference – but they could be as we have some strange ideas here in Florida.
So which type of conference attendee are you?
1) The Networker
Goal = Meet people to get ahead.
Where = Anywhere they can get access to the most amount of new contacts.
What = Handing out business cards like crazy.
2) The Sponge
Goal = Learning.
Where = Every breakout session they can possibly get into and maybe even more.
What = Laptop and smart phone in hand.
3) The Innovator
Goal = Get inspired.
Where = Innovative break out sessions and the exhibit hall.
What = Looking thoughtful and asking exhibitors way too many in-depth questions to be a potential purchaser.
4) The Superfan
Goal = Meet the keynote speakers.
Where = Social media trying to make contact with the keynote speaker.
What = Standing around trying to meet or engage the keynote speaker. Failing that talking to everyone about the keynote speaker. (This was me when George Takei spoke at the NTA!)
5) The Job Seeker
Goal = Get a job.
Where = Scoping the exhibitors and speakers or keeping pre-arranged appointments.
What = Clutching a conference program or list of delegates in hand checking people off.
6) The Deal Maker
Goal = Establish a business partnership.
Where = Exhibit Hall and table jumping at meals.
What = Networking for companies.
7) The Blogger
Goal = Write high quality content.
Where = Breakout sessions and keynote speeches.
What = Making notes and snapping pictures. (Me in the exhibit hall looking for useful things for Tutor Report readers)
8) The Team Teacher
Goal = Relay knowledge to teammates left behind at the office.
Where = Exhibit hall and breakout sessions.
What = Gathering information to take home and impart to the rest of the team.
9) The Thought Leader
Goal = Stay successful.
Where = Presenting.
What = Spreading the word.
10) The Spy
Goal = Competitive intelligence.
Where = The exhibit hall.
What = Checking out the competition. (I’ve done this, I think we all do)
11) The Salesperson
Goal = Make a sale.
Where = Usually the Exhibitors but sometimes too cheap to exhibit.
What = Exhibiting or sharking the people visiting the exhibitors. Perhaps I should have made another category of The Poacher, oh sorry that’s just sales!
12) The Partier
Goal = Have fun.
Where = The bar.
What = Drinking and dancing.
13) The Collector
Goal = Get as much free stuff as possible.
Where = The exhibit hall especially if they can sneak in when the exhibitors are gone for the night at those conferences with no security.
What = Prowling with goodie bag on arm or even a wheelie bag!!!
14) The Press-Ganged
Goal = To get through the day without falling asleep.
Where = Anywhere they can tell people they were forced to attend the conference by some weird Florida law that states that for every chunk of state money you take for a program you must send a delegate to the conference. So we can’t organize an election and we force people to conferences they don’t want to go to when they could be helping kids…….
What = Looking totally lost and out of place as many providers send the receptionist and supply clerks to make their quota.15) Tax Free Vacationer
Goal = Have the company pay for flights.
Where = By the pool.
What = Stating loudly that they should be with the conference but the company gets to give me a free vacation tax free as a bonus if I tack it onto a conference! Florida conferences see more than their fair share of these types but not usually the Florida Afterschool Conference as everyone is from Florida anyway!
So look out for them next time you find yourself at a conference or convention. Read the full article by Hubspot
