Whilst surfing the web recently I stumbled upon this short piece in Stumbleupon about a free ‘school’ under a bridge in India. The desire to learn and impart knowledge will know no bounds, it’s just a shame that the United States school system would appear to kill the desire in our children.
Founder of a free school for slum children Rajesh Kumar Sharma, second from right, and Laxmi Chandra, right, write on black boards, painted on a building wall, at a free school run under a metro bridge in New Delhi, India. At least 30 children living in the nearby slums have been receiving free education from this school for the last three years.
This photo prompted my alternative title to this piece – The face of learning.
Clearing up the School Room!
Do you ever tutor outside?
I remember going to school in Zimbabwe and on hot days with no air conditioning the entire class would de-camp under a tree in the school yard for reading. It was nothing like the ‘school’ above but it was also a far cry from schools in the Western Hemisphere; lying on the dusty orange dirt and flicking away flies – funny how I remember those hot, hazy perfect days above all else!
I truly believe we might be boring our children into hating learning.[divider top=”no”]
