Do You Allow Cell Phones in Sessions?

Written by Kath Thoresen

cell phonesIf you do, you may wish to rethink that strategy as a recent study in the UK has discovered that a total cell phone ban in school will increase student achievement.

The study was based in 4 cities in the U.K. and compared mobile phone policy with student achievement data from externally marked exams. The gains were prominent amongst the lowest achievers.

The gains observed amongst students with lowest achievement when phones were banned were double those recorded among average students. Results also indicate the ban having a greater impact on special education needs students and those eligible for free school meals.

While the study was performed in the U.K. that has higher teenage cell phone ownership than the United States (90.3% v 73%) the impact that devices have on learning may not be the great equalizer that many administrators tout them to be. In fact they have the potential to exacerbate learning and social inequalities.

High achieving students can be described as more focused and lower achievers more easily distracted. All types of students receive tutoring and additional instructions for a myriad of reasons   so perhaps it’s time to put the devices away and focus on the subject at hand!
