January can be a difficult time in any business and tutoring is no exception; money is short and our routines are disrupted following the short work weeks at the end of December. Getting back to normal can be hard and attracting new or existing customers to sign up for more tutoring can be even harder.
But it’s this understanding that will help you hit just the right note for a January promotion. Scanning the list of recognized days and events, it is obvious to cynical ole me that this is a wide problem; National Poverty in America Awareness Month stakes a claim in January, would it not have been better to choose a month when everyone wasn’t feeling quite so broke as well?
We have personal trainer day – work off all that food! International Quality of Life Month and Hunt for Happiness month amongst others. Why is January Hunt for Happiness month? Surely that’s what most of us were doing all December, isn’t January just the sugar-crash month? There is definitely a theme here and I shudder at the genuine who miss out due to the over indulged and over credited.
There are many events other than the ones subjected to my scathing scorn that are worthy of a promotion in January not least Martin Luther King day. However, I feel ever so slightly tacky using the memory of a great man to sell tutoring and as such my suggestion this month is for the lesser known National Handwriting Day on January 23rd, celebrated on the birthday of John Hancock the first to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Ah, big sigh, handwriting, a dying art form! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a great champion of bringing back cursive, far from it, I’ve been know to campaign against the emulation of hundreds of spiders crawling across a page. The world has moved on and I resent classroom time being spent on my children being taught to write like my great-grandparents. What I pine for is basic penmanship and our kids being able to write without looking as though they are five years old.
As with grammar it is an external demonstration of ourselves upon which many people will make instant judgements. Why do so many applications have to be filled out by hand? So your handwriting can be judged. Simple things such as character formation and word spacing and even how hard you press will be used by Human Resources personnel as ruthlessly as an FBI profiler.
For your promotion you could offer a simple hand writing workshop and spread the word on the importance of legible handwriting. Offer it free to existing clients and at a reduced rate for new clients, whatever you can afford. Make it fun and interesting and not at all scary. Use examples of terrible and exemplary pieces to get your point across and team that with practical advice. Get the parents to come along too and give out some free pens and perhaps stationery with your company name on them.
Talk to your local newspaper to see if they will run a story on your event. As always write yourself a press release and release it online together with taking brochures to the local schools and recreation centers to get the word out there. Don’t forget to check your insurance.
If you don’t like the above idea see if you can create a promotional event from one of the following campaigns, holidays or events.

2. National Book Blitz Month
3. National Blood Donor Month
