Effective and affordable online courses geared to counselors, learning support specialists and academic advisors are now available from Crossroads of Learning, a distance learning training company based in La Cañada-Flintridge, CA.

The online Academic Coaching course provides educational professionals an affordable and convenient opportunity to engage in structured and validated training. Each learner is paired one-on-one with an expert mentor to facilitate progress through the college level curriculum. The course is self-paced, to accommodate the flexible schedules of education professionals. Using research-based learning modalities, all Crossroads of Learning courses are all designed to be highly reflective and include spaced repetition and simulations which in turn stimulates learning, understanding, retention and application of the subjects covered.

Elizabeth Gonzales, a recent Crossroads course participant from North Florida Community College wrote “This course brought clarification about the difference between tutoring services and academic coaching services.” Academic coaching is a highly personalized field of practice. The course is designed to help each participant examine and fine tune their own philosophy and practice of academic coaching relevant to the unique temperament, skills, training and experience of each learner.

Training begins with 13 selected excerpts from the Crossroads of Learning Tutoring Foundations course including Socratic questioning techniques, helping students schedule their time, understanding culture shock, developing critical thinking, and more. The curriculum continues with 13 more coaching specific topics, ranging from academic coaching vs. tutoring, academic intervention warning signs and strategies and a review of the fundamental models and guiding principles of academic coaching. NOTE: graduates of the Crossroads of Learning Comprehensive Tutoring Foundations prerequisite course may elect to enroll in an Academic Coaching Capstone course, at a reduced cost.

A complete list of the topic and student learning outcomes (SLOs) can be found on the web at: http://www.crossroadsoflearning.com/topics.php

The Academic Coaching course fee is $349.00. Course participants work at their own pace as the entire curriculum is presented online, accessible 24/7, taking about 50 hours, and is easily completed within a 2-3 month period. All course materials are included in the fee and a Certificate of Training suitable for framing is mailed upon successful completion of the course.

“I began working on the Crossroads course the week after I began working as a Learning Specialist in a college” said Sarah Glessner, Manhattan College in NY, “so all I have learned through this course has helped me thus far in my work with students. It has been very valuable for me to learn these concepts immediately put them into practice with my students. The readings were clear and easy to follow. The assignments and journals were not difficult, per se, but certainly stimulated thinking about various topics and how they relate to me and my work.”
