Not only do I look for new Apps, software and general gadgets to pass on to our readers, I also look for new platforms to make my job easier and smoother, and I found this tutoring business resource; Wistia entirely by accident.
What a happy accident it turned out to be!
I was working away in Mailchimp getting ready to release new features for TutorFirst when I was struck by the idea that placing a link in my email for readers to watch a video was a wee bit boring and wondered if I could place the actual video in the email.
Well not if I wanted it to arrive in people’s inboxes was the general consensus, but you could place a thumbnail of your video with a play button that took you to the video. This appealed to my sense of flair and I signed up for Wistia on the recomendation of Mailchimp.
Then the fun really started. OMG (Sorry, quoting my 12 year old daughter), I know it is sad to get excited by software but after some scrabbling and a couple of very entertaining Wistia training videos later, I had done it.
You can upload your video and create code to embed it in your WordPress Site. Then you create code to place a thumbnail of your video in your Mailchimp campaign (other marketing email carriers also supported), changing the size of the screen and the color of the playbutton if required. When your email recipients press the video thumbnail in the email it takes them to the embedded video on your site.
If you don’t have a site, (if not, why not?) then it will play on the Wistia site with your logo at the top of the page, a place for potential clients to leave comments and when the video stops, it stops, even with a call to action on the last screen of the video!!!! Yay, anyone using You Tube to host videos will know why that is so exciting. Even embedded You Tube videos will present more You Tube offerings at the end of play, even your competitiors!
Whilst there is no such thing as a free lunch, there are many free snacks and Wistia offer a starting account allowing you to host 3 videos for free. From my initial floundering around, it would appear you get full access to all features with this account. For more than 3 videos the charges start.
Full Video Analytics
But you get what you pay for. Wistia offers full analytics of your videos, even on the 3 video free account. You can track how many people open them and watch them and all that good data gathering that we have been yammering on about since The Tutor Report started our tutoring business resource posts.
One last thing and it is by no means least. I had a problem with my Wistia email embed code when I updated my video, that turned out to be the fault of the way Mailchimp saved the first copy. I emailed Wistia support, lil ole me on my free account, not really expecting much of a response. Well five minutes later, yes I said five minutes, they responded with full instructions on how to circumvent a problem in Mailchimp! Not even their own software. Service. Priceless. Thanks Jeff.
Check out my new embedded video here. Looks good doesn’t it?
1. If you are using Camtasia to record your screen to make your video, increase the top of your recordable area slightly, just higher than you need, to allow for the Wistia branding bar on the free account.
2. If you have your logo on the first slide of your video, place it at the top of the screen so it is not obliterated by the play button, if you opt for a central play button.
Check out Wistia, this week’s tutoring business resource.
